09/04 New to the Blogroll

Just added two new bloggers to the Big Blogroll.

The first one is Starting Over, by Angel.  I absolutely love the tagline:

When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at will change.

The next one is called Myrtle Beach Organics:

This blog is an effort by Linda Murdock to relate to the internet world the value and benefits of using organic products.  She does sell such products at her storefront, www.GrandStrandOrganics.com.  But she is also a dedicated environmentalist who has championed conservation causes for the past 40 years.
Go check out our new bloggers, and welcome them to the party!

09/02 So Cool

We finally got a break from the heat, with a bit of a cold front reaching us.  The Microbial Laboratory logged it at 66F this morning!

Becky was enjoying donuts on the porch.

Ward was enjoying the smells of the lowcountry on a bike ride.

Fortunately it looks like tropical storm Erika isn’t going to be a threat to us.

Governor Sanford is still very much in the news.

Josh is very excited about his Arbys.

Dan is doing something very exciting with a launch of his book:

Before I wrote the first word of the novel, I wrote tens of thousands of words to help me imagine and understand the world in which my story would take place. At some point, Janet and I realized that I could have just as easily written interesting stories out of multiple other aspects of the world and its backstory.

So I thought, why waste all that?

Why not keep my story but give its world to the fans, and let THEM own it?

09/01 The One with Clafoutis

I may have included this post from Tartelette just because I like saying Muscadine Frangipane Clafoutis.  Or it might be because as usual, the end result looks delicious:

I found some more great images in this post from Chuck Boyd, looking back at pictures he took of his father’s work:

The Cosmopolitan Charlestonian takes us on a virtual walk across the Ravenel bridge:

one of the very best things about it is the 12 foot biking and walking platform extending off the Charleston Harbor side of the bridge. The addition makes the bridge a destination in and of itself, and taking the time to walk it can be a pleasurable and unique experience. In fact, short of strapping a set of home-constructed wings to your back and leaping off the barn roof, taking in the sites and sounds at the high point of the bridge is as close as a human can come to being at one with their inner bird.

Bottles to the Sea shares some of the comments he hears when going about his recycling efforts:

“Stop trying to save the world, Ed” as I picked a few bottles out of a trashcan at work.

(editorial note:  Don’t stop trying to save the world!)

A new online magazine is announced:  Chique Street.

08/19 Lowcountry Images

I think it’s about time for another picture roundup.  I am always amazed by the quality and variety of the photography on local blogs.

We have first day of school snapshots:

08/10 Lowcountry (shrimp) Bloggers (in the movies)

The Lowcountry has a lot of pride in its local shrimp. (With good reason!)

Chuck seems to have really enjoyed some peel ‘n eats at the Noisy Oyster:

The server got a break as he started his spiel. He suggested we start with an order of fried green tomatoes and how great the rock shrimp taste…we stopped him and said we live here and just wanted a pound of peel & eat.

He smiled and said “Surely, NOT one pound to share.”

Scout Horticultural shares a great story about the other side of Lowcountry Shrimp, catching them!

It’s not very often that a movie features a blogger as one of the lead characters, so of course the local community had things to say about  “Julie and Julia”.

A few bloggers got together for a meetup at the Terrace Theater.

Alison noted how impressive Julie’s feat of blogging every day is.

Francis gave it a rave review.

This is my first five-star film rating…. If you only see one more film this year, make it this one.

In other news, two new triathlons have been announced, one a new South Carolina Half Ironman, and the other an off-road triathlon on Folly Beach:

The inaugural Folly Beach Challenge is an off-road triathlon featuring paddling, biking, and running. After a 3-mile paddle on the Folly River to Folly Beach County Park, participants will bike 8.5 miles (round-trip) on the sands of Folly. After arriving back at the park, a 3-mile run awaits.

If you think a triathlon is too much exercise, you may need to reconsider once you learn about Pie Lollipops.

07/21 Camping, cooking, and more

There seems to be some momentum gathering for a BarCamp Charleston.

Eugene explains what a BarCamp is:

BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants who are the main actors of the event.

Jared shares some of his boundless enthusiasm, and gives us some details for keeping up with the project:

Watch barcampchs.org and @barcampchs on Twitter for more details as they become available. Also, thanks to Matthew Gregg, there’s a BarCampCHS chat room and mailing list.

In other news, another waterspout was spotted.

The folks at the Swamp Fox Restaurant are doing a dinner special that features produce from the Farmer’s Market:

The Cost of the Farmer’s Market Dinner is $30 per person plus tax and gratuity. Space is limited, so please call to reserve your table … Seatings for this special menu are available after 5:00 PM Saturdays only.

Xarker is already working on the upcoming Fantasy Football season.  Meet the Charleston Snobs.

And last, but never least, Chuck gives us a report from the new Home Team BBQ out on Sullivan’s Island.  Sounds like it was rockin!

07/13 Another week starts

The folks at Charleston Moves have great coverage of a recent meeting to discuss the extension of the West Ashley greenway to connect it to downtown Charleston.  They even have some suggestions for how you can help (see the post for more details):

1. Show your support. Go to the Roadwise website and select the “C” alternative.

2. Stay tuned. We believe the momentum to complete this project will pick up now and we will do everything in our power to encourage that process.

The folks at Fish are planning a celebration of Bastille Day.

Charleston Angler posts some great fishing photos, and a few more!

Holly talks about her “book tour” of farmer’s markets.  (The quotes are hers!)

The folks at McKelvin’s Surf Shop invite concerned citizens to the council meeting where Folly Beach will consider a ban on alcohol on the beach.

The folks at Folbot supplied the grand prize for the SC State Parks photo contest.

Geoff reports in from The Big Easy, where he visits with a friend in the Police force, and spends time with less upstanding citizens.

07/02 Keep them doggies rollin

Before I start the roundup, I want to give a quick plug to all our volunteers from the month of June.  We had great turnout, with contributions from James, Heidi, Chuck, Jared, Caanan, Kathy, Vera, Eugene, and Josh.  This sort of help transforms Lowcountrybloggers from being a part time job that doesn’t pay anything into a community project that we really enjoy.  It also means that you get a wider variety of viewpoints, which is more fun for everybody.  There are plenty of slots available for July and August, even if you contribute 1 or 2 roundups, it all adds up!

Now, on to the roundup.

Andra is officially a Certified Management Consultant.  Congratulations Andra!

Richard Bell has a great album of photos from the Harborfest.  Here’s one of my favorites:

tallships182

Kristin at ChasRunner fears she is losing her Marathon Mojo.  I hope she gets it back!

Geoff gives us an update on his trip, and describes the pieces of the trip that were lost with his stolen equipment:

Although everything physical that was taken can be replaced, the digital moments that those items recorded though, unfortunately, cannot.

The folks at Blue Ion share some pics of the progress on their new building at 301 King.

Heidi shares a cautionary tale of her cell phone experiences.

And last, but not least, some creepy advertisements.

06/24 The Governor

I debated whether or not I wanted to go there, but the overwhelming topic on everybody’s mind is today’s revelations from Governor Sanford.  Here’s a sampling of what the local blogosphere has to say:

David notes many of the official statements.

There is a general theme of disappointment, and sympathy for the family.  Many think things are going to get worse before they get better.

Earl urges people not to exploit the personal tragedy for political purposes.

Many are more concerned about the abrupt disappearance and use of state funds than with the moral issues.

Firefighter Hourly speculates on the changes that could occur if Sanford were to resign.

Chuck wonders about how long the dishonesty has gone on.

There was also a mock twitter stream, and the requisite pun.
