08/21 As the LowCountry goes ’round..

Loki DrinkingPark West Palazzo announces the City of Charleston will now be on Twitter and Facebook:

Charleston County has announced plans to provide emergency information on the Emergency Management Department’s new Facebook page, and also to tweet about emergencies on Twitter, at www.twitter.com/chascountygov.

CARTA is raising their fares, too.

The basic fare will increase from $1.50 to $1.75, reflecting a 16 percent increase approved by the CARTA board for all of its passes and fares.

Charleston’s Marketing Communications Agency shares 7 ways to promote your blog posts.

Jared and Eugene announce a date for BarCampCHS 10, November 13, 2010.

Planning for the second BarcampCHS is starting to kick off. Stay tuned to the BarcampCHS website or follow BarcampCHS on Twitter for the latest info.

Stacy Crew reminds us to remember to take care of ourselves.

..it’s critical to slow down and assess you and your surroundings to make sure you are in fact taking care of you in a way that is positively affecting your family. Remember, if mama’s not happy, ain’t nobody happy! Good or bad, stop and assess and ALWAYS make time for you!

Center for Women published ways to stay connected to your career, while you are busy being a stay-at-home mom.

In closing, Earl Capps remembers Rod Shealy. Our condolences go out to Sherry and those who feel this great loss.

08/16 a Quick Hop through Blogland..

Chuck recreates a photo, of himself, from 55 years ago.

So, here it is 55 years later.

A friend from Chicago is a good photographer so I challenged him.

Holding the original picture and his camera, he had me move closer, step back, move right, little to the left….hold it. Then he snapped the shutter.

Of course it’s digital now instead of Kodak film.

Joan rolls over 200,000!

My ticker crossed the 200,000 hit mark today. Nice landmark considering I had to start from scratch with this blog when my old one crashed dead. Thanks to everyone who followed me here or found me since. I might not always have time to respond but so appreciate all the kind comments and feedback.

Jennie B helps us, with a video,  know what to do when we run into an “ex.”

Your palms get sweaty, you seem to remember every tiny detail of your last run in, you obsess over what you will say if you have to actually talk, etc. etc.

Heather compares beet sugar with cane sugar.

So which sugar is better? I can’t give you a good answer, but I do know when I worked in the restaurant industry, we used Sugar in the Raw for our creme brulee to ensure it caramelized beautifully.

and Al Forno tests our Q knowledge.  Do you know your BBQ?

I’ll allow a week for everyone to answer, then post the scoop behind the question.  For this first question, there’s a pretty interesting story behind the answer!

08/10 Back-up, Help Others, Ride CARTA, Get Spooked, and don’t throw out the eggs!

Nerd Vittles is introducing Gobble for Google Docs.  Go read all the nerd bits, that I didn’t understand, to present this to you in a better geeky manner. :)

Palmetto Digital has given us a back-up primer, reminding us:

3 – Your important files should exist in three different places. This could be your computer, your spouses computer, an external drive, a burned DVD, a remote backup, a friend’s house, whatever. Just three distinct copies of the files.
2 – Those files should be on at least two different types of media.Media can be hard drive, DVD, memory card or stick, or even original paper or film.
1 – At least one of those copies should be maintained off-site. That is away from the site of the original. Preferably in a different city or state. Think about common natural disasters. Off-site should be out of reach of those natural disasters.

Extraordinary in the Ordinary reminds us to do simple anonymous, but deliberate, acts of kindness, for others.  Link over and read the list of ideas.

There are different kinds of acts of kindness. Some are done for people you know, and others for people you don’t.  Some are done anonymously, and some are not.  I like the idea of anonymous acts of kindness because that way selfish motives are not involved.  Sometimes it’s not always possible, though. I also like the idea of a little card that goes with it if it is anonymous so that they notice it and know it was intentional.  They are more apt to be touched by it, and it will create feelings causing them to want to pay it forward.

Park West Palazzo announces the introduction of Gullah Ghost Tours:

Guests arrive not knowing what a “haint” or a “boohag” is, but after a one-of-a-kind Gullah Ghost tour with Bulldog Tours, they will. The tour’s focus is the Gullah people (local descendants of West African slaves) and their storied fascination with the spirit world. The 90-minute tour includes exclusive rights to an after-dark exploration of Charleston’s oldest graveyard.

Kathi, of Carfree Charleston reminds us:

As a reminder, the last two public hearings on proposed changes to the fare structure and/or routes are this week:

Monday, 8/09/10 – N. Charleston City Hall, 2nd FLoor Montague Room 2500 City Hall Lane, N. Charleston, SC 5:30pm-7:30pm

Tuesday 8/10/10 – Lonnie Hamilton III Public Service Building Council Chambers, 4045 Bridge View Drive N. Charleston, SC  5:30-7:30 pm

Ex Marks the Spot finds good out of “BP!”

Steve, from Rehava, reminds us that “sell by” dates do not mean our food is bad:

For example:

  • Milk will remain safe for about a week after the “sell by” date. It’s safe to drink beyond that, but the taste may change for the worse.
  • Cottage Cheese will remain safe for about 2 weeks after the “sell by” date.
  • Mayonnaise will last for up to 4 months after opening, when kept cold

And, perhaps the biggest surprise, is that eggs, if properly refrigerated, will remain fresh for up to 5 weeks after the “sell by” date on the carton.

This venue offers a large enough space for a gathering.  There is a full bar and very fresh and delicious food choices.

08/08 with a heat index of 115.. just kidding!

The full brunt of Summer has hit the LowCountry.  Many of us are in hibernation mode, with daily heat advisories warning us of the dangers of being outside.

While many of you may be out spending away the last tax-free day of this weekend, I’m taking a peek  around the LowCountry blogosphere.  I see many of us hanging on and doing our part..  Here are some I’d like to share with you today, while I stuff my face with another one of Heather’s fabulous Sloppy Joe’s. (Yes, for breakfast! You need to try this recipe.)

Shadow of Diogenes wants to know what we are reading:

(Q)  What book, if any, are you currently reading ? Do you enjoy it ? Please elaborate.

I’m with Patrick.. I don’t think the Cube is ugly, either.

Hugging the Coast’s week in review, includes pineapple, Yukon Gold Potato Salad, and Salmon Sliders.  Holy Yum!

Joan shares with us my favorite part of photo-walks.  I, prefer to find the peculiar oddities that we don’t get from feature articles, in magazines.  I look for the simple and different, too.

I used to have a commenter who would leave upset messages if my photos strayed too far from traditional historic Charleston homes and mansions. She was outraged that I took pictures of sidewalk graffiti when I lived in such a glorious city.

Charleston Inspired invites us to participate in a survey about our lives in the LowCountry.

The strategy is called “Opportunity Next,” and is meant to guide the regional efforts needed to strengthen the economy, improve wages and fuel job growth in a global economy increasingly defined by knowledge and innovation.

Did you know Angie and Jennie B want to dance on Ellen? Shake it, girls.  More power to you.

Darryl has informed us that Sam’s Club is free to everyone this weekend. Today is the last day (Sunday) so stop what you are doing, right now, and go to Sam’s.

10/13 Cinnamon, Spice, and everything nice..

Apple Pancakes

that’s what these LowCountry Blogz are made of..

Fall is “turn back on your oven season.”

I’m not quite ready to give up the peachy scenes of summer, but I am ready for cooler weather..

A Yankee in a Southern Kitchen’s Peach Pound Cake still puts a smile on my face.

I, confess, I’ve never tasted Quince, that I’m aware of…  I’ve read about it, in literature.  I was thankful to see the picture.  I think I’ve seen them, in the store.  Helen, of Tartlette, shared Spiced Quince Crumbles, in mini iron skillets!

Bring on apples and pumpkin.. and we are delighted to find:

Adding to the lovely baked aroma’s, of fall:

Heather shared Cinnamon Rolls and Versatile Blueberry Muffins (Streusel is not optional.  Streusel is Love Crumbs.)

Denise, of Uniquely Tea, offers Autumn Tea Butter, for scones, biscuits, or toast.

I’m off to the kitchen, now, to experiment play with peaches and love crumbs. :)

09/30 Wise Words around the LowCountry

Dave Moulten:

You choose happiness; in simple terms, choose to be happy. You can do that whatever your circumstances; there is always someone worse off than you are.

Christopher Donahue:

If the Mayans were so smart, they’d still be alive.

Syd:

I think that the biggest help to me has been keeping my emotions in balance and not being afraid to ask for what I need. By getting more in touch with what I feel, the good and the bad, I have gotten in touch with what I need in a relationship with others. It just feels much better to do that than to vent and complain.

Shawn Wood:

Half of the battle of creativity is drilling down to the simple.  Sometimes I find that some projects are just too complex. There are times when I just cannot seem to get my brain wrapped around all of the details?  Have you ever been there?

Nikki Harden:

I stand in the dark front yard and admire the lighted windows from the outside, the way I’ve often done passing by strangers’ houses in the night. But this time, they shine for me.

DLibbon:

So here’s to another season of listening, pausing, and recording. I think i’ll kick it off with a simple commitment to journal once a day for the next seven days. That might mean the blog is quiet. Fear not my heart will be busy writing.

Youthinthecorner:

There is nothing wrong with messing up. However, it is leadership negligence to ignore or fail to learn from it. .

Matt J McDonald:

But there are always exceptions to the rules, especially when a great opportunity comes up.

Best of luck, to all of you, LowCountry Bloggers, in your passions and pursuits!  Thank you for blessing us with your words of wisdom.

07/30 Pulling out the Magic Mirror.. Romper Room Style..

“Romper, bomper, stomper, boo..
Tell me, tell me, tell me do..
Magic Mirror, tell me today,
did all my friend’s have fun at play?
I see all my friends had fun today..”

I see:

Ross is reminiscing about summer days, as a kid, at the “rule pool.”

Denise, of Uniquely Tea, introduce us to Charles Earl Grey.

Geoff and Nik are playing in the Dakota’s:

We headed on up US Highway 85 today, when we got out first real stark warning that gas station were going to be few and far between. We leaned towards “Destroyer” tactics – Ships in the US Navy back in World War II would fill up even when they didn’t really need to, so that they could be ready for action at anytime. So even when the gas needle was just over halfway today and under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have filled up, we stopped to get gas. This IS the Dakotas …

Michael is hacking his way through the jungle.  Holy Batman! :)

Syd explores one of life’s hard lessons:

But what do you do when you make an amends and it isn’t accepted?

David paints a picture of Maine, for us:

This is the second time I have been up here since May, and I have seen one sunny day.
Round these parts, people are getting cranky.

I see Keeley, Eugene, Helen, Eric, Sabrina, and..

Who is that?  Our own Heather:

Meet the lady in person and you’ll soon add brainy, beautiful, cheerful and clever to the description. Heather Solos is our kind of enterprising gal. She’s tossed the stereotypes – i.e. “stay at home mom” and “blogger in pajamas” – straight out the window and forged her own new media career while doing so.

“and, of course, friends, I see you.”
