06/20 Mother Nature’s Throwing Heat

I say this tweet from Heather pretty much sums it up:

It is so hot the heat knocks you down while the humidity steals your lunch money.

It is, indeed, nearly oppressively hot out there, so be careful when you’re out and about. Hydrate early and often! I’ll be periodically updating the high heat over on Twitter and Identi.ca with a roundup of just how bad it got later on tonight over at my weather blog.

Social Media Club Charleston is launching!

Charleston’s own chapter of Social Media Club officially launches Tuesday night at the College of Charleston with a panel discussion that asks local members of the media about the value they find in social media. Panelists include Ken Hawkins of TheDigitel.com, Dan Conover, Janet Edens of the Post & Courier, Andy Owens of the Charleston Regional Business Journal, and Raymond Owens of WCBD News 2. We kick things off at 6:30 PM Tuesday and hope to see you there! Check out the event on Facebook.

To the blogs…

It’s Father’s Day Weekend. Kathy celebrates her late father’s birthday — he would have been 84 today. Here’s James Moffitt:

This weekend is Fathers Day weekend so I hope all of you fathers are able to enjoy this time with your families and are thankful to God for the blessing your family is to you. I am also hoping that your families will appreciate all that you do for them through the year. I always tell my children that the best gift in all the world that they could give to me is just to love me. I know that my children love me and it is always extra special to me when they take the time to demonstrate that love in some small way.

Things are heating up in Iran; Mike Burleson shares some selections from Twitter.

Tweet in the City swung by the Biton Fashion Show.

Party at Dan C’s!

Ed’s seeing nice progress in his recycling program — sometimes a little well-placed shame is quite effective. :)

Keep smiling bravely, Frida!

Hope everybody stays comfortable this weekend!

06/06 Spouting off about Saturday

Another picture of the Ravenel Bridge waterspout. #chswx on Twitpic
Well, today was a normal-enough rainy day until tweets about a waterspout near the Ravenel Bridge started flying about. Sure enough, there was one, and someone (unfortunately, not me) was on hand to take some pictures. It’s gorgeous as long as it stays over water. :) The Charleston Weather FriendFeed group has links to more pictures from today’s waterspout as well as the one just off Edisto Beach on Thursday.

Despite the rain, bloggers haven’t been too busy today. Here’s a few quick hits:

Patrick flirts with the worst fear of any iPhone owner, and I’m not talking about a BlackBerry zombie invasion.

JanetLee has had a scatter-day complete with Moon Pies and Wild Wings.

How do you entertain small children when you’re sick? Let’s help Heather out — she needs some relief!

Today’s the anniversary of D-Day. In commemoration, Mike Burleson shares a piece from the Navy Review Newsletter.

Hugging the Coast shares the secrets of fortune cookies.

Enjoy the rest of your Saturday, folks — and try to avoid one of these things. :)

05/15 Friday, Rainy Friday

So the sky went from this:

Looking out over the bridge

to this:

Encroachment

in a little under two hours today. It was quite cool to watch from my dry perch downtown, but folks in the North Area got soaked. James and Katy Moffitt are working on a move, and we really need this weather to be better for them, as they’ve had a rough few days. Hang in there — and congratulations on your move!

Lucky for these ladies, they got their ride in before the rain hit. Definitely wasn’t the greatest day weatherwise for National Ride Your Bike to Work Day.

A happy five-year wedding anniversary to Pink Wallpaper!

Andra finds wisdom in otherwise shocking sayings.

Patrick, count me in with those who have had it with voicemail.

Finally, a wonderful video to close it out, courtesy of D3lta V: the Slap Chop Remix. Such a brilliantly-done video!

Enjoy your weekend and try to stay dry — looks like we have more of today in store for tomorrow.

Jared Smith obsessively photographs clouds and only clouds in between Twitter-related ranting at jaredwsmith.com.

05/08 Friday: The Final Frontier

It’s oddly fitting that the reboot to the Star Trek franchise opened in the Terrace’s reboot of the Charleston IMAX, now known as the Terrace Hippodrome, last night. And boy, were both great. Eugene has a spoiler-free review of the movie and the venue. Chuck’s got several pictures.

It’s May, which means Spoleto’s revving back up — and so is SpoletoToday.

Dan Tennant’s muses on what he’s learned at CREATE South including some excellent thoughts on “the rules of Twitter.”

New cyclists can learn much from Dave Moulton. His latest piece describes taking the lane, a strategy for safe but assertive cycling on roads.

Dan Conover tackles the reasons why comments on newspaper sites suck, and not just accepting that they will, either.

And finally, a little Friday Fail for your amusement.

Enjoy your weekend!

To say that Jared Smith blogs at jaredwsmith.com is looking more and more like a blatant lie on a daily basis.

05/01 Happy Birthday, Chuck! (and other Friday notes)

Yesterday, local blogger Chuck Boyd, who just celebrated his 70th birthday, wrote:

I had toyed with the idea of having 70 blazing candles on my milestone cake, but my sister-in-law summed it up well: “A 7 and a 0 is easier to handle than 70.”

Well, at the Lowcountry Bloggers meetup last night, Chuck got just that: 70 blazing candles. Very cool — or warm. :)

More fun last night: There was another rave at Addlestone Library at College of Charleston. Rather Moore has a special rave edition of ADDnews.

On a completely unrelated note, Theo Moore doesn’t think Windows 7 is a big deal.

There’s plenty of swine flu information and even more misinformation out there — be alert for scams.

Best of luck to Kristin as she’ll be running the North Carolina Marathon tomorrow!

Finally, some great news for the Bradburns.

Want to volunteer for roundups? Don’t forget to sign up for May. Ask Heather or Dan all about how to contribute to Lowcountry Bloggers.

Jared Smith blogs at jaredwsmith.com in whatever spare time he can find (which isn’t much).

04/24 The Night Before CREATE

Many Lowcountry bloggers will be in Myrtle Beach tomorrow for CREATE South. The program is jam-packed full of a wide range of topics, from cool art tutorials to building community online through new media (and note just how well Lowcountry bloggers are represented!). Eugene’s CREATE checklist is complete and he’s ready to go. I’ve got a look at my discussion.

CREATE isn’t the only game in town as far as tech conferences go. Tofu recently went to POSSCON in Columbia, an open-source developers’ conference.

Swine flu is the latest health scare. Dan cuts through some of the hype over on Xark.

Organizing any group can be a feat in and of itself. Dave passes along a particularly harrowing experience.

Jason’s looking to rock, and you can too, thanks to the latest installment in Free Music Friday.

Nikki was quite impressed with the French cyclist at Cirque de Soleil.

Wherever you are this weekend, I hope it’s excellent. Your weather will be gorgeous and quite warm — we’re knocking on the door of May, so enjoy it while you can before the temperatures just get unbearable.

Jared Smith’s pretty much everywhere these days. He blogs at jaredwsmith.com.

04/17 The Day After iFiveK

I get the feeling that those who ran the iFiveK last night were pretty sore afterward — almost too sore to blog about it, despite our t-shirts. :) Eugene has a brief recap with a group shot. (Mine’s coming soon. I think.)

Chris smells a fish with a recent speed limit change in his area.

Rather Moore talks to local filmmaker Jesse Berger about a documentary he’s working on with Nate Mallard about the venerable, well-billboarded tourist trap South of the Border.

Untamed Beer reviews Beer Wars, the tale of microbreweries fighting against Big Beer.

It looks like the Charleston Tea Party had more attendees than estimated. Jeff Tompkins rounds up the best of the lighter side of the tea parties.

Home Ec 101, “what are you weird about?” is a very, very loaded question. ;)

Enjoy your weekend. It should be gorgeous out — just beware of the pollen!

Jared Smith is struggling to walk, but at least his fingers are still limber enough to pump out writing at jaredwsmith.com.

04/03 Bridge Run Eve

Rumor has it there’s a big race involving a big bridge tomorrow somewhere in the Lowcountry. ;) Bill Walsh says it’ll be quite a gorgeous day for the Bridge Run. (I can dig another day like today. Apparently so can Psycho, especially after yesterday’s downpour.) After the run, of course, you’ll want to put back all those calories you burned.

CARTA announces a new weekend Downtown to Folly Beach line — very cool for those interested in not adding to traffic and saving some money on gas. And speaking of fuel efficiency, JJ has some insight as to what killed off the fuel-efficient car.

The folks at the Audubon Center at Francis Marion Forest finally has something in common with its birds: They’re now tweeting.

Charleston MOVES is looking for some volunteers for some upcoming events.

Sabrina muses about the complications of adulthood.

Heidi tells the secrets of the power of the silent bribe.

Best of luck to tomorrow’s runners!

Jared Smith will be sleeping in on Saturday, continuing to procrastinate on updating jaredwsmith.com while secretly hoping for a weather event to blog about on charlestonwx.com.

03/27 Friday Eclectic

We’re all over the place on this Friday. Here goes:

Saturday night’s looking a little rough according to Josh Marthers.

Did you see the elephant outside the News2 studios today? Rob Fowler and Brad Franko remember Suzie Q, WCBD’s mascot back in the ’50s and ’60s, who was immortalized today by the City of Mt. Pleasant placing a historical marker in her honor.

George shows us how First Federal is the latest to embrace social media.

I wonder if Mrs. Griswold followed Wayne Newton to Charleston. And speaking of Fashion Week, there’s a lot of great #chsfw Twitter chatter, and live-blogging from TheDigitel.

Sabrina, I love that I get to wake up at 10am tomorrow. :)

The College of Charleston recently held an “Accepted Students Day,” in which students who were accepted got a test drive of life in Charleston. Check out the video.

TGIF, indeed. Have a great weekend, everybody!

Jared Smith just woke up, so pardon him for not having a witty way to advertise his personal blog, the world according to Jared Smith, for the second consecutive week.

03/20 The end of winter

As far as seasons go, winter’s officially a thing of the past until December — but in Charleston, we really first started seeing spring in February — where “spring” is “an annoying coating of yellow on my car.” Also, ahhh-CHOO!

Allergies aside, you’ve got a chance to get Spring started right with a vernal equinox party at Avondale Wine & Cheese.

Spring also brings out madness in folks — March Madness, that is. Mike’s bracket isn’t where he wants it to be. It seems Loki and Thor take March Madness a little too literally, though. (Hope your Friday is better, JanetLee!)

Eugene updates us on his i5K training progress — keep it up! (For the record, I am getting a bit better about just getting off my rear and running. Overcoming inertia is the hardest part, after all.)

I don’t mark things as “must-read” much, but Dan’s thoughts what’s next for news over at Xark! qualify, especially if you’re into new media.

A lot’s being made of President Obama’s “Special Olympics” comment last night on Jay Leno. Jeff Tompkins offers up Obama’s new strategy for dealing with the fallout from potentially offensive utterances.

Jesse shares an example of a business taking on social media.

I love the idea of The Terrace expanding to the old IMAX.

It was a banner year for the Charleston Food & Wine Festival.

JJ comments on the stimulus money standoff. (Just so you know, Sanford is going to reject the stimulus money.)

I echo Earl’s call — please, folks, slow down in work zones.

And finally, a little fun with photographs:

The idea of holding a picture postcard in front of the actual scene is clever. Wish I had thought of it.

Saw it on a site called photojojo.com that usually has something artsy or different. One example I saw used a postcard of a house down on the Battery.

All I had was this wooden cutout of the downtown fire station on Meeting at Wentworth.

Enjoy the first weekend of Spring, Charleston — it’s going to be gorgeous.

Jared Smith lets CSS tweaks on his blog, jaredwsmith.com, keep him up at night.
