11/05 Fall ~ Thursday ~

Some of you might have noticed that I totally missed last week round-up…and some of you might have not taken any notice! Well, I totally forgot all about it – I did remember earlier in the day, but with tons of stuff happening around me, I just totally forgot, and yup, I do get those days and I could of ask Heidi to do it, but didn’t even remember that!! LOL…so here we are again… hmmm wonder if there’s any good stories….

Uniquely Tea – has not let us down, she has a guest writer from Arizona telling us all about Yanabah Tea

Of course, for those of you that are fans of the Ying Yang Twins – Rather has a lot to say when she interviewed them.

Okay, I can’t help but put this in as well, another from Rather – Love – In Translation – I love hearing love stories about long distance relationship, as I can attest to that! :)

As we find out more about the things we eat, here a few reason why we need to drink more water.  Of course, there are a few of us that don’t like to Drink Water – so here is what you should know…

Here’s some suggestion if you like to Go Green – and what you can do with your pumpkins…

How about this blog for all you Beer Lovers – if you want to homebrew your own – check out Untamed Pumpkin Ale

This is for parents who are Home Schooling their children – Teaching Children The Habit of Thinking

And to put a smile to your faces, The Eye always has something to share – some of you might not get his sense of humor, no matter… has any of you wondered to See Your Mom Naked?

Thanks for stopping by and there were alot of entries, but I have other stuff that needs my attention at this time so I bid you farewell until the next time….

As always, you will find me at The Filipino Friends :D

10/30 An Extra Hour For Halloween

So, if I have this right, we “Fall Back” this Saturday as part of Daylight Savings. That could mean a lot to really, really late night Trick or Treaters. Or, I could have it backwards. Again.

Blood Curdling would be a good way to describe Halloween if you also include some Shakespeare.

Leaves changing colors define Fall but so does  going to the county fair up in Ladson. Can you “picture the Fair?”

As long as you drivers are paying extra attention to the little kids in costumes running around in the dark, don’t forget there are some HUGE things that can smack your car. Same old advice: be prepared for the unexpected.

Another view of Halloween in the woods has the advantage of being educational as well as fun. Don’t everyone dress up as as Smoky The Bear though.

Have you ever had a chance to tour a lighthouse?  Morris Island is out but the one on Sullivan’s Island will let you in the door next month during an Open (Light) House. You won’t be climbing a lot of steps though. Guess that would  be called Light House Keeping?

It’s also MLB “World Series” time so “Buy me some cheesesteak and Cracker Jack..”

The ideal job MIGHT be working from home. Check out these observations and decide for yourself. Beats stuffing envelopes.

Bike lanes and bike paths are fine but it would be even better if you could go online and find directions to plot your bike ride safely. Yes, that would be great.

Speaking of cell phones, “can you hear me now?” Oh, that’s right, we weren’t discussing those handy dandy devices. Be sure to hang onto yours.

Finally, I admit I belong to a GANG. In fact,  two of my gangland involvements are mentioned on my blog. Go check it out Gang Busters.

Thanks and have a fun – slightly longer – weekend.

10/23 Enjoy a Great Weekend.

The end of a long week in the workplace. Work sometimes is the easy part..it’s those co-workers that keep you keyed up. Thanks Millie Hart for sharing your brown bag lunch. (I love the Sharpie pen note written ON the slice of bread.)

Maybe there should be more food property rights  negotiations between lunch makers and lunch eaters? It’s important in the marketplace as well as back at the office.

“Oh those kids today.” Well, apparently, here in South Carolina about 50% do not graduate high school. That places our state in the 50th position in the US. In Charleston County,  20% of 9th graders read at the 4th grade level. Good column today Brian Hicks.

We ARE discussing/moving toward better water quality in this area. Folly Beach did some trash talk a few nights ago. Remember the slogan: “Water The Future.”

Handicap parking by not-so-handicapped drivers really came into the news a while back so it’s time for an update. Pull into this clearly marked space. Thanks for the blog emphasis at Think South.

What can you say about Veggie Cous Cous that hasn’t already been said? I just like the sound of saying it. However, getting it into a conversation is not easy to do.

Several beautiful local sites (sights?) for weddings are featured today. Just click here or snap here.

Gotta get up early tomorrow for Barcamp at the Old Navy Base. Hope you all took a look at my  Two Redheads posting and the need to support our  “local” music scene.

Thanks for following the Lowcountry Bloggers.

10/16 End of a Short Week!

Well, for those who WERE off Monday, the week just flew by.

Speaking of banks, I see a local one has gone mobile. Hmm.. I am picturing a recreational vehicle with a bank name spray painted on the side. Would I be eager to deposit my money in something with wheels on it? And the motor running?

I think they announced they are using Twitter or Facebook as opposed to strictly online banking

Self-torture could be a planned activity if its for a worthy cause. Hey, I found my cat at a mall pet store years ago. He had his back to me and never turned around. He must have been on break. I got him anyway.

What a pleasure to be reading GMLc again. It’s sort of like smelling pluff mud once more after you’ve been away from it for a while. I mean this in the nicest way.

Do not go to Google to answer the Eunuch Quiz. This blogger challenges us often with mind-teasers that makes you keep a tab open to Wikipedia. Check it out.

Flipping through the paper yesterday, I saw a familiar name in the Community section and enjoyed a view “behind the camera.” Might be time to drive over to the old Navy Base and see what’s going on in all those refurbished buildings and new businesses popping up.

And, now for the further adventures of Squeaky Man. It is just a coincidence that the Smart place she went to shop for her Pet is the same store where I bought my orange cat four years ago. Then they had an agreement with the local pet shelter and displayed available critters.

Here’s a guy who is no longer a “heavyweight” and mighty glad to break another barrier on his way to scaling down. He talks about a weighty topic though, so go and see what’s on his mind.

A lady we know presents an interesting view  of what’s going on in her country and I salute her loyalty and energy in trying to make a difference both here and at her home. “We need to love our country and our neighbors.” Keep it up Kat.

If I read the Tweet correctly, it appears there are more Ben Folds fans here about. I hope she was able to see him in concert a few months ago at the PAC. If you are into arts and crafts, see what this “stoned” lady is creating.

Several people chided me about my recent vacation postings that seemed to center on drinking beer in Ireland and Munich. Because I do not wish to bore people by focusing only on a limited topic, I am pleased to recount my Dublin Literary Walking Tour experience.

Life is too short to limit yourself ..or to drink cheap beer.

10/12 Happy Columbus Day…banks.

Back before I retired, when I used to go to work each day, my company posted a list of “official” holidays off. Columbus Day never made the list. Were any Lowcountry Bloggers off today? Do you work in a bank? Or deliver mail?

If you’re Canadian….Happy Thanksgiving.

We just heard from the College of Charleston’s SGA person. I still get nervous when someone says “what can we do for you today.”

Swine flu is all set to go head-to-head with “regular” flu in a battle for vaccines. I copied several emails about the subject and sent them to my doctor. I asked for his suggestions on what someone my age should do. Some people are concerned. Some are confused. Hey, stay healthy out there.

When a place has the word “burgers” in its name, I have a pretty good idea what’s going on inside. But when there’s an eating contest that makes it even more fun to stop by and really check it out. Better show up hungry. And you probably should like burgers.

So Today would be a good day to take a look at Charleston. Well, we live here (most of us) so we look around but here’s a site with THAT activity for a target.

Or, you could plan to keep a watch on Charleston. There’s two thought-provoking places to take a look below the surface. What did we do before blogging?

Here’s a lady who brings a smile to my face. I can depend on it. Some days that is crucial but she has a delightful take on….just about everything. And anything.

Here’s a blog to read after every meal or every six months. I get that mixed up sometimes. Both are good ideas and you’ll find some probing thoughts here. You might feel a little pressure. Just sit back, relax.

Company is coming and you want to plan a menu to feed them. I usually make reservations. Heather has been helping people in the kitchen for years. And in all the other rooms around the house.

This is an official “Thank You” for all you do. Where do you find the time??

I’m back from vacation and have made some headway on that towering stack of photos. It’s just too easy to shoot. A few are shared online on my blog and it’s fun to look back at all the overseas places and events I just experienced.

The theme for the monthly Photographers Group meeting this Wednesday is “Beer.” After Oktoberfest in Munich and the “Salute to Arthur (Guinness) in Dublin, I feel I am VERY ready for Show & Tell.

Hope you had a nice “holiday” today.

09/22 Tuesday Is Not Monday

Good Evening lowcountry bloggers and readers! Here’s a selection of what’s been happening around the lowcountry blogosphere this Tuesday…

We’re going to kick off today’s round up with a story from Sherry about how ‘tired’ she was. Read it on EX Marks the Spot

Meanwhile over at The Column, Reloaded read about the old guy who kept an intruder at bay.

Sail by The Navy Yard Blog, where you can learn about the very interesting Jim Schultz

Patrick Properties hails from Louisville, Kentucky, and feels that Autumn is on Standby

Janet Lee, meanwhile thinks she might be depressed and also thinks she’s boring. I’m sure she isn’t. Read her at Kittens On The Keyboard

Charleston Waterkeepers would like to share with you all the story of the Folly Beach Clean Up last weekend.

I know I’m a geek, but I find what are completely ungeeky things interesting too, so I was keen to know, and quite absorbed by the post on Home-EC 101 about the difference between tomato paste and crushed tomatoes.

You like BBQ? Who doesn’t? Why not check out the 13th Annual Lions Club Cook Off? More at Lowcountry World

Still with food, overfishing is a very real problem in many parts of the world, including some fish in lowcountry waters, and Charleston Angler has a detailed post about some of the aims of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, and how it relates to South Carolina.

And another issues related to the environment around us, Matt J McDonald takes TruGreen to task over it’s wasteful marketing campaigns.  Of course, it is often easier to sent mail to everyone, regardless of suitability. It takes time to weed out lawns, I mean, those with lawns. Read more at A New Marketing

Finally, staying outside I’d like to finish this round up with a look at Middleton Plantation through the eyes of Dave Linder, and his Lowcountry Sketchbook.

More from me soon I’m sure. Remember Tomorrow is Hump Day! Find me at Eyebee’s Blog

09/21 Happy Monday, Lowcountry!

I don’t have any personal memories of Hugo, as I didn’t arrive in Charleston until 1998.but, I’ve seen a number of folks making comments to the effect that they can’t believe it’s been twenty years since  that monster roared into town. Of course, if you live through such an experience, it’s something that you’ll never forget, but, I can’t believe a whole week has passed since last Monday. Hope you had a great weekend, and here’s a round up to start off another new week…

Firstly, if you interesting in remembering or finding out more about Hugo, check out this  archive from The State. Also there’s a special show on TV this evening – check out News2. Syd tells us what it was like when Hugo came to town at I’m just F.I.N.E and Daniel Bates writes about one of the worst hit places in MyMcClellanville

Getting back to 2009, Sara Dobie says that Muse Restaurant in downtown Charleston, feels like home. Read more at Sara Dobie’s Blog.

Meanwhile if you like good burgers and you’re in the Folly Beach area, you’ll be interested in this post about Rita’s Seaside Grille from Charleston Chow

Check out the Art Lock-In with Charlie, and for some cool shots of the Old Navy Base Power Station, drop into Robert Donovan’s Photography Blog

It’s not as downbeat as it sounds – Mustang Rolling talks about crushing the American Dream.

Last, but not least for this Monday,  Charleston Today would like to share William Hendricks Tenements with you.

Have a great week! You can find me all over cyberspace, including Brightkite

09/19 I Love Saturday

So sang Erasure in 1994. I quite like Saturdays, but then I like every day, most of the time.

Anyway, to kick off this particular Saturday, Denise at Uniquely Tea would like to remind you that today is “Talk Like A Pirate Day”.  If you’re a tea aficionado you’ll find lots about tea there too of course!

Someone sent me one of those amusing emails a couple of days ago. This one was about how things used to be. I clipped an except from it and posted it to The Eye, as it’s really true.  We really did only have Slow Food!

One thing I like about a Slow Cooker, is that once you’ve gotten all the ingredients together and into the pot, you can usually go away and forget it for a few hours, and (within reason) it won’t ruin if you’re  late back to it. Perhaps you’d like to try out this great recipe for Cajun Beans and Red Rice from Hugging The Coast.

Many blogs containing recipes come with great photographs of methods and finished dishes, which leads me  to tell you about Paul’s Problem. Paul Lester has got too many cameras! I wish I had that problem, Paul, Anyhow,  stop and take a look at Paul Lester Photography, where he explains his predicament.

In Mount Pleasant five poker players have been involved in a predicament of a different kind. The Texas Hold ‘Em Games Saga continues for them. Read more at Park West Palazzo

Jared W. Smith has some great news he’d like to share with everyone over at Jared W. Smith. I’m sure I speak for everyone, in congratulating Jared, and wishing him every success for the future.

On a more sober note, here is a though-provoking and moving post from the spouse of an alcoholic. Check it out at I’m Just F.I.N.E

I spend way too much time at my desk. I know I should exercise more. I used to really enjoy cycling. It’s a great way to explore the area, and to keep fit as well.  Having said that, Blogs like Greg On The Run at least make me think about getting off my butt  more.

Also, if you’ve got a few hours to spare today you could get over to the Scottish Games at Boone Hall

That’s about it from me for today. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Catch me around all over the place online,  I’m often found in Twitter and Friendfeed

09/08 Addressing the Children

President Obama’s speech to school children has been the subject of many posts. As always opinions belong to the quoted bloggers.

Brad Franko:

For those of you charging that this is a Socialist agenda, keep in mind Presidents Reagan, and H.W. Bush also addressed America’s students.  They too were met with critics for doing so.

And, on the other side, releasing the transcript when the media first started asking for it, would have likely prevented a lot of the outrage.

Simple Cents:

In his talk the President says “You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job. You’ve got to work for it and train for it and learn for it.” Those in our state impacted by layoffs and the economic downturn can certainly understand the importance of this message.

Jamie Sanderson:

Here we go. The South Carolina GOPher patrol is at it again. And they want to use your taxpayer money to send them to the statehouse to work on, get this, legislation to “prevent further efforts by the President to influence school kids.”

JanetLee:

Personal responsibility, developing goals, not using circumstances as an excuse, hard work, respect for yourself and others, wow that’s some scary stuff there! Oh wait, no it isn’t. It’s what we’ve been telling our children for generations.

Patrick:

The parents who were so sure, absolutely convinced that there were unimaginable levels of improper politics that were going to be “sold” to unsuspecting children will never, of course, admit that their suspicions were the slightest bit unreasonable. They’ll only sit back with a big smile on their face, confident that the stink they raised was the only thing that prompted Obama to post the text of the speech to begin with. (Despite the fact that it’s practically routine that a president releases the complete text of a major address before he sits down to deliver it…it is the Information Age, after all.)
