10/04 The Social Network~~Movie Meetup

Unless you have been living under an avalanche in Antarctica for the last few days, you haven’t heard that the Facebook movie, The Social Network, was #1 at the box office this past weekend.

I’ve already seen it, and despite Hollywood taking the usual liberties with the true story, I found the movie to be interesting, engaging,  and well acted.

Actually, Justin Timberlake is pretty good…

And, I’m all about seeing it again! Let’s have a Movie Meetup!!!

Date: Friday October 8, 2010

Time: 7:20pm

Place: Terrace Theatre, 1956 Maybank Hwy, James Island

Other: Pre-movie meetup at 5:30-5:45pm at Zia Taqueria (next door)

Let me know in the comments if you wish to attend the movie, Zia’s or both!

08/10 Proposed MeetUp on the table.. Your opinion valued

The proposed meet-up would be Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Carolina Crust, in Hanahan Station.

6:30-7:00pm ish (what time sounds better to you?)

This venue offers a large enough space for a gathering.  There is a full bar and very fresh and delicious food choices.

If I have a good response, I’ll call them, directly, and make the arrangements.

Are you in?  Let me know in the comments.

11/13 Events and Updates

As I’m sure many of you have noticed updates here at LowcountryBloggers.com have become more and more infrequent. I want to thank everyone who has been involved with the community in all of its forms over the past few years

Dan Tennant has moved to Pennsylvania and I have had as much as I can handle with the growth of Home-Ec101.

The community has also grown, blogging is no longer the only game in town. We have Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed, 21st Century Photography, and even some activity on Google Wave. There is also  Social Media Club Charleston a group that works to help locals understand and use various social media platforms. I have been talking with Ken Hawkins at TheDigitel to see if there would be ways this community could be taken under their wing, but there isn’t a definitive plan at this moment.

Speaking of The Digitel, they are looking for a few writers and this may be something some of you are interested in:

Well then you might have the right stuff to join TheDigitel’s writing team. We’re looking for a few folks to spend 5 to 10 hours a week writing about their community.

Your time will likely be spent covering live stories, interacting on social media, reporting about other great local reporting, and everyone’s favorite: rewriting parts of press releases.

If you’re not yet familiar with us, TheDigitel.com is a hyperlocal online media site that does primary reporting and “context aggregation” in Charleston. What this means is that we’re the gateway for all things local.

Last item on the table. Google is hosting a picnic tomorrow (Saturday November 14) at Cypress Garden, here is their press release along with contact info to learn more. The weather should be gorgeous, so maybe we’ll see you there.

10/06 Touring

A chance encounter has changed Wendy’s outlook:

The night after that happened I made a decision that I would never make anyone feel the way that woman made me feel. I made a conscious decision to live Joyfully. That decision has had a profound impact on my life. I feel like I have been liberated from stress.

09/03 Blognic ’09 planning

Crossposted from Imablog

If it’s September, that means time to start planning for another Blognic!

By my count this will be Blognic #4 and since Wannamaker County Park worked so well for the last two, might as well go there again (unless someone has other suggestions).

Now we just need a date. My thoughts for potential dates are the weekends of Sept 26, Oct 3, Oct 10 or Oct 17. Those just happen to be weekends I have free, but don’t let that stop you from suggesting other dates. Personally I like the Oct 10 or 17 dates.

As usual, Blognic ’09 will be a pot-luck affair for the whole family and by no means limited to bloggers so everybody’s invited!

06/30 Virtual and Geographic Community

You don’t have to look far to learn my opinion of on our role in community. Today’s round up is a look at the community in action.

This Friday run a 10k to help raise money for Forester’s fight with cancer:

PLEASE join us for Seabrook Island’s 2nd annual 10k charity run/walk & silent auction! You’ll get a groovy t-shirt and help us with the burden of medical bills! Before and after the walk/run there will be the opportunity to bid at a silent auction. Also, a cash bar with Bloody Marys and Mimosas will be available before and after the race! Mimosa before running? Sounds like a great idea!

Cross-promotion is a clear benefit of community participation.

Have you been paying attention to Geoff’s mishap? It’s encouraging to see so many locals rallying behind him.

JanetLee:

Geoff is getting an idea of the real America – yes, bad things happen, but that’s when we come together.

JJ weighs in and shares a quote from Helen Keller:

“I am only one; but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; I will not refuse to do the something I can do.”

Pam:

It seems that folks from the Lowcountry and beyond are determined to help Geoff stay on the road – and at the same time redeem his frustrated view of this country.

Charleston City Paper:

According to Dan Conover at Xark!, the fund-raising effort has been largely decentralized and has garnered support from the North Carolina blogging/Twitter community in addition to widespread local response. Conover writes, “Online communities are communities nonetheless.”

And of course, we need to hear from the man himself:

What do you say when someone sets up a ‘help Geoff‘ website for you? When ‘#helpgeoff’ becomes a Charleston hashtag of the day. Or most of all, when people are willingly parting with their hard earned dollars in these tight-times to cough up for me for new equipment and keep me on going some. Today I learned the definition of the word ‘humbled’.

‘Humbled’, of course, cannot begin to sufficiently describe how it made me feel. No way will “Thank you” go anywhere near towards really thanking you for you help, love and support.

By the afternoon, my mind was made up. I carry on. Because giving up would be … well … just giving up, wouldn’t it? And as another favourite quote of mine goes … “You can’t fail, if you don’t give up”, which means that giving up is not an option.

Janet wants to know what the Lowcountry creative tech community needs:

what YOU would do — with a building that could have shared infrastructure in terms of both space and tech. I’m talking about a really spacious spot, with room for cooperative workspace, offices, artist studios, classroom space, editing bays, event venue, commercial kitchen, even conference and workshop space. Maybe a gallery. The concept I’m in love with is downtown. It is HUGE, though, and mostly ready to go.

What does downtown Charleston/rest of Lowcountry need?

Our blogging and Twitter community frequently leaves the comfort of the monitor’s glow to meet up. Another opportunity will soon be here. The Social Media Club of Charleston will be meeting at the downtown Taco Boy July 14 from 6 – 8pm. If you’re on Facebook, send an RSVP.

Patrick talks about the #twitterfail problem:

For many traditional media haters, services like Twitter represent an exciting alternative, where citizen journalism and speed-of-light posting ability combine to give old-school journalism a run for its money.  One of the biggest complaints the anti-traditionalists have is that the old-school media like to “blow things up out of proportion.”

04/12 Save the Date! LC Bloggers Meet-up April 30th, 2009

IMG_0224

The April, end of the month, meetup, has been scheduled for Thursday, April 30th, 2009!

Come join us, at Carolina Crust, in Hanahan, at Tanner Station, across from the new Super Bi-Lo, at 7pm.

My post, about April meetups, around the LowCountry:

We’ve, personally, tried three of their specialties and have been fully impressed with their fresh ingredients and different approach to Pizza.

The Boy’s favorite is The Pesto Chicken and Spinach Pizza. The Pesto is made, in house, with real pine nuts. None of that cheaper walnut thing, is going on , there. He happily added roasted red peppers, to it, too.

Girlie and I really liked The Quattro Formaggio, on our first visit. This pizza is a cheese snob’s delight! Did I mention my absolute love of Feta, lately?

Last week, we tried Spicy Southern BBQ Chicken. I don’t think I’d call this spicy.. but it was surely good. I was cutting pieces of both the Pesto Chicken and Spinach and The BBQ chicken, and eating them together! OOOhh to the Goat Cheese and BBQ sauce, in one bite. Full of yum!

Carolina Crust also has 3 large screen hi def tv’s and a full bar. They are located in Tanner Station, across from the new Super BiLo. (1105 Tanner Ford Blvd, Ste B-6 (843) 553-2662)

Anyone willing to try the special pizza with arugula and sea salt, with me? I can’t get anyone, I birthed, to try it. I’ve, also, never had arugula! Come on, let’s live a little. *smile*

Scott and Charity Webb have created a great environment with tasty recipes to tempt us, with fresh, local ingredients.  There is a full bar and several beers on tap, too.

See you there!

03/28 It’s a Stormy Saturday Night

First, our next scheduled meet up is April 16 at the Charleston Maritime Center for the i5k after party. It should be a chance to meet others outside of our usual circle. The i5k is being sponsored by The Digital Corridor. Six of us are running, but everyone is welcome to join in on the fun. There is a $5 fee and the fun begins right after the race which starts at 6:30pm.

We have two new blogs for the Big Blogroll this week. Please welcome The Sage Avocado and Lowcountry Architect to the blogosphere.
